I can’t complain
April 23, 2007 at 10:26 am | In Bits & Pieces, Ranting | 1 CommentThough I’m sure I have before. We get a small fortnightly allowance from the government for having a child with a disability. We did have to do the necessary jumping through hoops to get it which included a Doctors report on Moo’s functional capacity. The report was so long it wasn’t funny. It irked me a bit because CP wasn’t on the recognised disability list (and autism was) which makes the procedure a lot easier. The Dr ticks the box and that is it – you qualify.
Well, things have changed in the last two years. CP is now a recognised disabilty (so long as the child is wheelchair/stroller or walking frame dependant). I don’t know when this was changed. The federal government did it without fanfare or fuss.
It’s a small thing. But a good thing.
We have our review for the payment soon. At least it will be easier this time!

Wow – I can’t believe that the Aussie gov did not recognize CP as a disability worth funding until recently! In the US I have found that there is a hierachy of which disabilities receive the most funding and support – blindness being at the top and CP/brain injury at the bottom.
I hate to be so cynical, but it’s like they are trying to put a value on a life in this manner and it really sucks if you are at the bottom end of the scale.
Yay for the government changing that and for you getting a little support. Every little bit helps.
